Canadian ultimatum for Danish Grand Banks shrimpers Last Updated Fri, 27 Aug 2004 07:32:51 EDT ST. JOHN'S, NFLD. - Canada has warned Denmark to stop overfishing on the Grand Banks or face a closure of East Coast ports to its ships. FROM MAY 6, 2004: Canada boards vessels accused of illegal fishing The deadline is noon, Newfoundland time, on Friday. The warning is the latest volley in a fight between the two countries over shrimp fishing just outside Canada's 200-mile territorial water limits. The Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization (NAFO) has reduced the shrimp quota for Danish vessels from 1,500 to 150 tonnes, but the Danes refuse to obey the international order. Arni Olafsson, a councillor to the Danish Foreign Minister, said Denmark had no choice but to overfish, because its NAFO quota was unreasonable. But Canada's assistant deputy fisheries minister, David Bevin, said Ottawa was prepared to take action if Denmark ignored Friday's deadline. Canadian fisheries representatives were in the Danish capital Copenhagen on Tuesday to insist that Denmark comply. Canada has in the past shut its ports to Danish vessels. In other cases it has even seized the boats fishing illegally.

Hi! Hope you don't expect any help from us idiot American bastards. ************* Canadian MP calls U.S. 'idiots' Thursday, August 26, 2004 Posted: 11:32 AM EDT (1532 GMT) OTTAWA, Canada (Reuters) -- Canadian Member of Parliament Carolyn Parrish had said she hated "damned Americans" and called them bastards in the run-up to the Iraq war. She found a new moniker, idiots, on Wednesday in discussing the planned U.S. missile defense system. "We are not joining the coalition of the idiots. We are joining the coalition of the wise," the Liberal legislator told a small group of demonstrators. Parrish, who had to apologize for her "bastards" remarks last year, at first denied using the word idiots, and when reporters pointed out they had her remarks on tape, she said: "I don't mean Americans are idiots." Parrish then begged reporters not to use the remarks: "Please guys don't put that on tape," she said. "I already got into trouble once.... Really, please, I've had enough trouble." Four hours later, however, she hardened her line. "The last one was a really stupid thing to say," she told Reuters. "Bastards is an inappropriate word. Idiots is a term people use in everyday conversation," she told Reuters. "They tortured people in Iraq, they (the Iraqis) have no weapons of mass destruction. Could somebody explain to me whether you think they're idiots or geniuses?" The top spokeswoman for former Prime Minister Jean Chretien, Francoise Ducros, had to resign in 2002 for calling President George W. Bush a moron. Chretien's successor, Prime Minister Paul Martin, has pledged to put relations with Canada's largest trading partner on a warmer footing. Martin said after Parrish's latest remarks that the debate about missile defense, intended to guard against attacks from what the United States calls rogue states, was "very, very important." "There is no room in this debate for that kind of language," he told reporters, waving his hand dismissively. "You're going to get very strongly held views but let me tell you those strongly held views have got to be expressed in language that is acceptable." But Parrish refused to back down. "That's Mr. Martin's opinion," she told Reuters. "No, I'm not going to apologize. http://www.cnn.com/2004/WORLD/americas/08/26/canada.us.reut/index.html ***************** Ray (alias Lava)

Hi Ray, As a Canadian, I can assure you and all other Wargamer readers that the vast majority of Canadians would see Ms. Parrish as the "idiot". I can also state that she holds no position in the Canadian government- apart from being elected to represent her constituency... similiar to a US Congressman. She is acting independently, as is her right in our democracy. She was elected as a member of our Liberal Party, and yes the Liberal Party currently controls the Canadian government (our Prime Minister, Paul Martin) is the leader of the Liberal Party. BTW, Mr. Martin (as I understand it) plans to endorse the US plan for a North American missile defense system. If that is the case, then she is speaking out against the plans of her own Party & government... and she will face sanction for breaking ranks with her Party's stand.

And here is the beginning of the fall-out: http://www.herald.ns.ca/stories/2004/08/27/pCanada101.raw.html Friday, August 27, 2004 The Halifax Herald Limited -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ... CP file Liberal MP Carolyn Parrish in the House of Commons in February 2003. CP file Liberal MP Carolyn Parrish speaks in the House of Commons in February 2003. MP should apologize - Martin Parrish stands by remarks about missile defence supporters By SUE BAILEY / The Canadian Press OTTAWA - Prime Minister Paul Martin has urged Carolyn Parrish to withdraw her latest anti-American slur but hasn't demanded she apologize. The maverick Liberal MP says she won't back down. Parrish was just stating the obvious when she called missile defence supporters a "coalition of the idiots," she said in an interview. And she'd do it again. "I believe in free speech and I am a colourful speaker. I occasionally will use terms that other people find bold. "That's me, and I'm going to stop trying to fit into some cookie-cutter mould that somebody else has tried to design for me." Martin wasn't pleased. "This is too important a debate to be derailed by those kinds of comments," he said after a cabinet meeting Thursday. But Parrish won't be penalized, he said. Critics said that's a failure to rein in an intolerant "zealot" who will further damage Canada-U.S. relations. Heated political debate is expected this fall over Canadian participation in the U.S. plan to build a missile defence shield. The Liberal caucus is divided on the issue as it prepares to lead a minority government in a fractious House of Commons. Parrish made international headlines last year for publicly muttering: "Damn Americans, I hate the bastards." She landed in hot water again Wednesday when she told a small anti-missile-defence rally: "We are not joining the coalition of the idiots. We are joining the coalition of the wise." Martin called her soon after. "He talked about options" but did not ask her to say sorry, Parrish said. "The tone was quite businesslike and acceptable," she said of the five-minute call. "He's a very nice man." Martin's inner circle weighed in Thursday on Parrish's choice of words. "I think she should have kept her mouth shut," Immigration Minister Judy Sgro said as she entered the cabinet meeting. Defence Minister Bill Graham said the remark wasn't helpful in a situation requiring "civilized discussion." And a right-wing group that lobbies for individual rights and better government said Martin should do more. The National Citizens' Coalition called Parrish "an intolerant, anti-American zealot" who should be pressed to apologize. "So far Martin's response to her brainless remarks has been tepid to say the least," said vice-president Gerry Nicholls. So much for Martin's campaign promise to mend Canada-U.S. relations, said Conservative foreign affairs critic Stockwell Day. Parrish at first denied Wednesday that she had made the remark, and asked media not to report it. "I did become concerned that the issue was going to be me and . . . the word (idiots)," she explained Thursday. "And I just thought: 'Ugh. Darn. Here we go again.' "Then I settled down and gave it some serious thought and said: 'No, I'm not going to back down from this.'" Canadians should be concerned that missile defence could speed the global weapons race and spur rogue countries to design missiles that could breach such a shield, Parrish says. She has been speaking on the issue with little media interest until now, she added. "Suddenly, because there's one word in there that people find very exciting, I'm getting tons of coverage. It's a criticism of the media, if I may be so bold." Paul Cellucci, the U.S. ambassador to Canada, said Parrish is entitled to her opinion. "Canada is a free country, people can express their opinions how they see fit," he said in Goose Bay, Nfld.

Atleast they arent the dutch..... Can you picture a toliet saying "NO MORE BOMBING !!!" Look Who Has a Real Potty Mouth... Fri Aug 27,12:19 PM ET AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - The citizens of Amsterdam may now take counsel of talking toilets that expound on the perils of smoking or the futility of war and berate them on hygiene and cleanliness. The first such toilets, fitted with sensors to detect exactly what visitors do and to pass comment if appropriate, were installed in a central Amsterdam cafe Thursday. Creator Leonard van Munster, who sees the project as an artistic venture, will build more if the demand arises. "You might consider sitting down next time," the toilet told a male Reuters reporter politely in a female robot voice. The next user was told that "The last visitor did not take heed of basic rules of hygiene." Depending on circumstances, the toilet might remind you to wash your hands or ask you to lift the seat. "It could suddenly start coughing and warn you about the dangers of cigarettes, or name all the cool movie stars who smoke. It just depends what mood it's in," van Munster said referring to people who sneak off to secretly have a puff. But then the Candaiens have their priorities straight. But I have to ask. Why dont the Mounties think that they want that beer to DRINK not to sell ? Trucker Charged in 'Dumb-Crook' Beer Heist Fri Aug 27,10:09 AM ET TORONTO (Reuters) - Somewhere in Canada there are thieves with nearly 50,000 cans of beer they will have a hard time selling, although police said on Thursday the truck driver who disappeared with the loot has been arrested. The shipment of Moosehead beer, worth over C$75,000 ($57,000), was on its way to Mexico from an East Coast brewery when it went missing, along with the driver. The transport truck was recovered last week -- still running -- in Grand Falls, New Brunswick, but with most of its cargo missing. The 30-year-old driver was picked up in Lindsay, Ontario, about 1,000 miles from Grand Falls. He has been charged with theft but police reported he did not have any beer with him. The shipment of Moosehead was labeled in English and Spanish for export to Mexico, so it could not be sold in Canada. Nor could it be shipped into or through the United States without proper documentation. "Its one of these classic, dumb-crook stories," said Joel Levesque, a spokesman for Moosehead. "They can't sell it anywhere in Canada without giving away the immediate fact that it's been stolen... So we have crooks stuck with 50,000 plus cans of beer that basically they can't fence." Very little of the stolen beer has been found. Four cans, three of them empty, were found in various parts of the New Brunswick province, according to the police and media reports. On Monday, police found another 5,000 to 8,000 cans after a half-ton truck with a homemade trailer went off the road in New Brunswick. The driver of that truck fled the scene.

Heh, a thread about a Canadian/Danish terratorial dispute turns swiftly into a "hey, one of your crowd called us a pack of idiots!"....completely off topic, but how and ever....it's a bit like taking the BNP and saying "Look what a British figure said about black people...."-thus taking it out of context. Anyways, on the dispute, Denmark and Canada, two feared superpowers of the arctic...err, anyone care to tell me what either nation could do with it?

possibly send frigates to patrol the waters for Canada and more frigates to protect the Danes. IIRC they already had some bumping going on a while back between warships.

These things can get nasty pretty quickly when you have two opposing navies and air forces on the same patch of water-one flyboy gets in close to buzz another, they bump....etc. Worst case is someones sub does a royal navy and drags someones fishing boat under.

If Denmark entered into a conflict, wouldn't Greenland have to help out since they are a commonwealth ? At least that's what I think they are.

Those Dirty Danes! First they infiltrate Scarlet Johanson in to get our guard down. Now they are stealing our cod. Will they stop at nothing?

You know, the thought just occurred to me. It is cod FISH they are stealing, isn't it? Because if it is cod pieces, then they have really crossed the line. And I don't mean the Equator.

Im sure the 58 people that actually live in Greenland are more then willing to mount a offensive.
