Jutland released - Thursday, December 11, 2008 11:04 PM ( #1 )
Gents,

You can now grab the demo here and purchase the game here.

I know there is a Storm Eagle forum at wargamer.com, but the thing looks a bit dead.

Cheers,

Thanks. 1. Jutland must connect to the SES server once in a 7 day period for License Validation. After you connect, the counter starts over.

2. Some, especially pirates, have attempted to manually install our games and updates. Literally unpack the install and try to install the files one at a time, editing the registery, etc. This will not work and will lead to a corrupted install.__________________

Thanks for the update Chelco. Was there no official release announcement? I've been looking forward to Jutland but didn;t expect it to be released until Q1 next year. I like Distant Guns.
You could have stationed me running around naked with an American flag as the only American troop presence in West Germany and the Soviets would not have invaded.

Ey Gus,

I don't know. I have just been following the thing at another forum where the devs. are very active posting.

Apparently they are more worried about losing sales to pirates than losing sales to legitimate customers who won't buy because of their phone home scheme.  I'm in the latter category and never bought Distant Guns because of it.  Won't buy Jutland because of it either.

Hmm weird...thanks for the heads up anyway. Without your post Chelco I wouldn't have known it was out!

I would really like a boxed copy, but it doesn't look like SES are interested in anything but digital distribution.

For Distant Guns I actually printed out the PDF manual and IIRC it came out to between 200-300 pages. Having preprinted manuals for DG and now Jutland would be sweet.

I have mixed feelings about DRMs. Specially in this case where the devs. have a small, niche type of studio. It's hard to not sympathize with them.

The only thing I always wondered is: what happens if they go kaput? You just lost the game?

The press releases were sent out about 2:30 this morning.  Unfortunately, I'm not usually awake then, and it often takes me a couple of hours to get to the news.  It's up now.  N.B. that there is a demo for download that allows 2 scenarios to be played for an unlimited time, and several more than will offer teasers of about 10 minutes each.

Our news is here:  http://www.wargamer.com/news/5881/JUTLAND-Released

Gus, if you're interested, I can probably get you a review copy :)  Just LMK....but don't you owe me something already?  Just asking...
Read the post.  But don't read into it unless you just don't get it.

^A lot of people seem to think so here, yes, if the company goes belly up then the buyer is out of luck. And I tend to agree. That's why I'd like a boxed copy.

I'm very interested but I do owe three writeups already :(

I would love to see Dr. Cobb (Bismarck) do a review of it though.

Despite my DRM misgivings I will probably end up buying it on my own in a few months time if not sooner.

I can see a big publisher taking steps like this to combat piracy, but is a small-time company who is working in an extremely niche market really that worried about pirates?  You'd think the % of wargamers who indulge in wares would be much smaller than for the overall PC user population (I could be horribly naive and thus wrong).  The game looks intriguing but this kind of stuff really makes me pause.  The demo may be the tipping point for me.

StormEagles beautiful word document file (I believe page 28 ) contains the box they've created for the game. I hope it is not just for illustrative purposes. By the way, beautiful word document advertisement and feature highlights with screenshots. White writng a little hard for my poor eyes but nice looking.

Another look at box for game? If not it is a teaser for sure!

I guess what I was asking or implying by this was, when box designs for games are created/advertised usually, hopefully, sometime won't a box version with manual and disc be released?

There aren't any good numbers, but we strongly discourage piracy and from what I gather, most wargamers are in lock step with that policy.  The only time I hear about pirated copies of games is when the DRM is so draconian that they need to break it in order to play a legitimately purchased copy.  Like everything, I'm sure there are exceptions to the rule.

Speaking as someone who bought Distant Guns on the strength of Dr. Cobb's review, I might like to get another perspective on this game. That's not to say I felt that it was a bad review (point of fact I enjoyed it very much) but I weighted elements of the experience very differently than did Jim and was, overall, more disappointed than thrilled with the game.

WOW phone home every 7 days this is worse then EA I can't bieleve people are actually thinking of buying such an intrusive and kill the honest customer DRM system.  I dont care how good the game is they can keep it I wont take it for free with crap DRM like that.   That is just insane the only way these companies will learn is if we don't buy the product period.   If they get zero sales they may rethink the DRM.  I bought the first version of the game and dont' even play it because of DRM it was a waste of money.    This is just as bad as spyware and you have to pay for it.   No thank you keep the game I am shocked to see people wanting to buy this even if they know it phones home every 7 days!

Im not one to harp about DRM, but this is a little overkill.

^Hmm, well put Flitcraft.

If you don't mind not having a review of the game immediately, I would probably do one many months from now with my own copy.

Count me as another lost sale for both games.  Considering the small potential audience for games on such esoteric subjects, I find it hard to believe that (1) it's an audience rife with thievery, and (2) the actual sales lost to such thieves exceeds the number that will not buy because of the copy protection.

Fortunately, there are plenty of companies more respectful of their customers, and I am never at a loss for games to play.
