CPU Fan/Heatsink question
-

( #1 )
So the first few weeks of this system I built have gone fairly well. However, I think I've hit a few snags. For some reason, I will get a system hang when playing COD5 for a while. I reboot my system and go to BIOS, and noticed my CPU temp is around 50 deg Celsius. At this point, I'm not sure if it's the CPU fan or something else (memory). Intel Quad Core 2 9550, 2.83 Ghz Corsair 750W TX PSU Coolermaster 690 Case (1 front fan, and 1 side fan being used) Asus P5N-72 T Premium motherboard (with its own soundmax card) 2x2GB 1066 Mhz DDR2 (with memory fans) BFG GTX 280 GPU 3 WD 500GB Hard drives 1 DVD/RW Using Asus PC Probe II to check temps and volts, normally I get 30deg - 40deg for the CPU during regular operation. Motherboard usually in the 20's and 30's. The GPU will be around 40deg-60deg's during most apps, and a little higher during stuff like COD5 or Fallout 3. I haven't check the CPU voltages after rebooting in that situation though. Normally in Windows, it's around 1.12 V Any thoughts? Ghostryder, I remember you mentionning the Core 2 Quads got hot. Figured the Intel Quads were designed to work with their stock fans/heatsinks. Think this might warrant a different fan/heatsink? Thanks,

So far no problems tonight, been alt-tabbing in/out of COD5 to experiment. The CPU usage looks ok, gpu temp is expected around in the 60's. CPU temp is 50degrees. So far no hang.

looks like good temps to me. I by default replace the default CPU fan as the aftermarket ones are so cheap- and make a big difference- but not really all that critical unless your really overclocking- you can still overclock with the stock fans just not to the degree you can with the aftermarket ones. They are a bear to install on a system already built though- best to do before mounting the MB. Note the brand on the memory can limit your OC ability moreso than temps. Hoever if it's a good brand getting that 9550 to 3.4 GHZ should be possible even with a stock fan. The ram is plenty fast enough for a 1:1 ratio-

I have had a few system hangs with COD5 and seem to have cured them by reinstalling directX. It might be worth a try, especially a new version of directX was released by MS in August.

So far so good, and thanks again. I'd consider another CPU fan if it was a little quieter possibly. I'm checking Frosytech.com to for noise levels. However, I can't seem to find a noise level for the stock Intel Quad fans. At least I'd be able to compare the two. I'd like to avoid getting a giant fan/heatsink set as much as possible. They do look agonizing to install when the mobo is already set. Yes, I'll try the driver/directx reinstallation first (although they are at the latest versions). This game appears to give a lot of people the same angst (hopefully it's just the game). The temps do look normal enough. I've got 2x2GB DDR2 1066 MHz PC2-8500 Corsair Dominator (with stock fans). I guess the fan set might come in handy if I'm overclocking (sometimes the middle fan in the set vibrates upon bootup, but goes away after a few minutes; a known issue apparently). Maybe I'll try reseating the ram sticks into different slots and see if that changes anything.

Ah I think I have the answer to the system hangs I had. Can't believe I didn't think of this. Apparently, the Asus AI suite (a bios utility used at the o/s level) seemed to be crashing my system. So far no problems when it's not running. Lesson learnt - don't bother with bios tweaking software, do it in the BIOS instead.

Hey neat. Checked the manual quickly - doesn't look like you need any extra backplate for you mobo either.

No it just bolts in like the stock fan. It is cheaper at New Egg. endfire79 Hey neat. Checked the manual quickly - doesn't look like you need any extra backplate for you mobo either.
