The naval museum there is cool. The Yorktown is anchored across the bay along with a sub, Coast Guard Cutter, and a couple of other ships. A can't miss. My favorite restaurant just outside of town is the Queen Anne's Revenge. Lots of real pirate booty and great food, too. Downtown is touristy, but I like to just get a place on the beach. We used to go on the off season and celebrate Thanksgiving down there. I know a place that's reasonable and caters the meal, too. Nothing like a walk on the beach, interrupted by a call from the grandparents who tell you the food has arrived!

Does sound very good...I would imagine Thanksgiving time in Charleston is just beautiful, weatherwise, as well. From the description it sounds a bit like Savannah, which also has a good naval museum. Are there a lot of Revolutionary-era landmarks to visit in Charleston? That's always a draw for me and something The Wife can get into as well.

^Older than the jewish cemetary in downtown Manhattan? There are Portuguese and Dutch jews from the 17th century buried there.

Other than forts Sumter and Moultrie which are givens, go to the beaches. Folly is cool, the least touristy. Check out the surfing at the Washout, along with a number of good "beachey" places to eat. After leaving Fort Moultrie on Sullivan's Island, go to Dunleavys or Poe's, two excellent watering holes. Finally there is the Isle of Palms, probably the most touristy of the beaches, but a couple of good restaurants, Coconut Joes and the Wind Jammer, home of the bikini contest. In response to all of the tourist questions my wife gets, "No you can't drive to Fort Sumter, you must take the ferry." Carl

The Yorktown is a can't miss site. The Medal of Honor museum located aboard is moving and awe inspiring. Sadly all of the ships are in need of repair and hull overhaul. The destroyer Laffey has been towed to drydock for repairs, but money is a huge issue at this time. Estimates are that it would take over a million dollars to repair the Yorktown. There is discussion about taking the submarine Clagmore and displaying out of the water, much like the U Boat in Chicago. Overall though a great display of naval history.
