Worldwide Warfighter Whup-off! - Saturday, August 08, 2009 6:13 AM ( #1 )
We got in 3 different games in the Warfighter session.

Chris and John faced off in a scenario from The Guards that's being adapted for the new map in World of Conflict:

Once we were done with it, we realized that the scenario reconfiguration based on the new maps were in need of more adjustment.  Some of the victory locations needed to be moved.  So Chris and John moved on to the Asian Thunder scenario and Steve and Brian (who'd just arrived from work) started slinging dice over the fixed version of this scenario.

Once Steve and Brian started, I was taking more pics of the other game.  However, Steve did a good job of walking Brian through his first ever wargame.

The Battle of Salyan - Counterattack, had a tank-mech task force of Azeris trying to retake Salyan from the Iranians, who have a variable reinforcement mechanic and got an infantry company to plus up their tank-light inf-recon task force.

The first game was a scenario that originally appeared in The Guards, but needed to be reconfigured for the new maps that will appear in World of Conflict.  The Brits had a mission to pick up and retrieve a tribe that was being persecuted for religious reasons.  The remaining tribes were trying to establish highway roadblocks to limit mobility through their homeland and take control of their region.

On initial setup, the Brits have the following forces:
2x LT INF CO (3x LT INF PLT, 1xSniper ea); 1x LT Armor CO (3xScimitar PLT, 1xHQ sct); 1x Militia Team (2x LT INF PLT, 1xFOX PLT)
1x RECCE PLT; 1x ATGM PLT; 1x MORTAR PLT; 1x CDR

The Tribes have
1 tribe of: 4x LT INF PLT; 2x ATGM
1 tribe of 4x LT INF PLT; 1x WHL ATGM
1 tribe of 4x LT INF PLT; 2x WHL ATGM
1x LDR

A lot of moving around, but no one slinging bullets yet

The tribes at the far left and right have already occupied their roadblock positions.  The Brit never travel far enough to the right side of the map for them to be threatened by that one, and can avoid the one on the left by cutting through the middle of the map.  Ships in the night...

The Brits move out along the roads to pick up the tribes and move back.  The other tribes let 'em go for the most part, content to sit on their checkpoints.

With the pickup done, it's a race to see who can grab what VPs before the end of the scenario.  With both sides hunkering down to avoid casualties, there wasn't nearly enough shooting.  The redone objectives for the tribes have now moved to the middle of the map, and should be a bit more entertaining on the reboot.

Of course, I didn't take nearly as many photos of round 2 of this one, because there was a LOT of shooting going on with the other one.

Re:Worldwide Warfighter Whup-off! - Saturday, August 08, 2009 6:45 AM ( #5 )
The Counterattack during the Battle of Salyan had the Azeris trying to retake the city from the Iranians.

These 5 city hexes are the ultimate objective.  1VP for each dead enemy unit, 2VPs for each hex of Salyan you hold at the end.  The Iranians start with all 5.
(Yes, I know the civilians and Iranians are too close together in their color schemes.  Sorry.  Will get fixed.)

First contact as the Iranian armor moves to reinforce the recon company where the meet the initial Azeri push along the northern outskirts of the city.

First battle results in stunned Azeris and dead Iranians.  The blue will take that trade-off all game long.

The Iranians try to move through civilian-occupied towns, and cause the civilians to take up arms.  This one little sniper (locals with hunting rifles) would come back to haunt the Iranians....

The Iranian reinforcing infantry company is starting to bypass the civilians as the other Iranians try to fight their way through.

The Iranians try valiantly to hold the bridge on the north side of the city.

Some good attack rolls helped.

The Azeris finally break thru.

The Azeris are breaking into the city, and the armed civilians are successfully holding up the Iranian reinforcements.  The half-strength tank unit in the top right is sneaking around the city to help out the civilians.

Big shootout in the city as the tankers help the locals (on the right).  Notice that the sniper the tank is still helping hasn't moved in 5 turns, and is still tying up the Iranians right next to him.

The Sniper of Doom

The Iranian casualties are ridiculously high

But at the start of the last turn, they're only down 2 VPs because they hold most of the city.

The Iranians really needed some Azeri casualties, while not losing any more of the city.  Didn't happen.  The Azeris ended with 3 city hexes, and only 2 dead platoons.  The Iranians racked up a lot of casualties and wasted a lot of time with the civilians, instead of chasing the Azeris around.

What do you use for cardstock to mount your counters? It looks very thick (and colored to match the units to boot!).
I know it's not what you want to hear (critique and praise of the actual games) but I am a simple person who
gets distracted by the shiny bits when it comes to boardgames. Probably why I love Avalanche Press so much

it actually scrapbooking foam.  I buy multi-packs of sheets of all different colors when they go on sale at the craft store.  Get about 20 half-sheets of different colors for $5-7 about 2x/ year.

Damn - actual WARGAMING happens and everyone spends their time talking about Smuck's daughter at the rifle range instead of the games in play...  (sigh)
