Location : Barents Sea Opponents : German,British Date : 25 DEC 1943 Scale : Ship Description : On Dec 25, 1943, the German battlecruiser Scharnhorst set sail from the Norweigan port of Altenfjord, on an intercept mission versus Convoy JW-55B. At 7:30 am, Captain Bey of the Scharhorst ordered is escort of 5 destroyers to fan out and subsequently lost contact. At 8:40, a screening force of cruisers identified the Scharnhorst and opened fire. The cruisers dogged the German battlecruiser, keeping it away from the convoy itself until the British Battleship Duke of York and cruiser Jamaica arrived. The Scharnhorst sunk at 7:45 pm on December 26. |
