It should be played with C/C turned off and all other options set to default (ON). The human player must play the German side of this scenario. The German side has initial objectives assigned for those who wish to play with C/C turned on. This is a good battle for trying C/C play. The first winter on the Eastern Front was a time of no quarter in the bitter struggle for position in the front lines. This scenario is an attempt to depict one such incident. Many liberties have been taken to translate reality into a wargame and to try to create a scenario that is both challenging and based upon actual events. A platoon of the German 250th Infantry Division (Spanish Blue) was manning a communications strongpoint along the Volkhov river not far from Leningrad. The platoon was attacked and destroyed by a strong Soviet force within hearing distance of other Spanish units who soon advanced to investigate. The Spaniards were horrified by the sight of their countrymen, stripped naked and pinned to the frozen ground along the river by their own bayonets through the hands and picks driven through their chest cavities. Soon, a Spanish attack across the river toward the East was organized. Enraged by what they had seen, the Spanish Civil War battle cry, "Ariba, Espana" was heard from the Spaniards as they attacked the Soviets. The Volkhov River was frozen. This is simulated in the scenario by the use of shallow water hexes representing the river since this allows units to pass over the river. Take command of the assault and begin by following the tracks (trail) in the snow toward the river. When your force has reached the river, reinforcements will arrive to assist in the assault. Your troops are flushed with desire for revenge and they will fight very hard. A key element in your force will be five 50mm mortars. These mortars are armed with smoke and many rounds of ammunition. However, they are short-range and will require some maneuver to be in position to tip the balance of battle. In the actual battle on the Volkhov, the Spaniards inflicted a severe beating (some say, "massacre") upon the Soviets and extracted a full measure of revenge. In this battle, you have the opportunity to do the same. |
