However, the Leningrad Front did not stay quiet during this period of time. Throughout the summer and fall of 1942 the Soviets launched several attacks in the effort to break the strangle hold that the Germans had on the city. All of these were met with stiff German resistance. On January 12th, 1943 a full battalion of the Soviet 122nd Tank Brigade launches an attack against the German lines south of Leningrad. As the Soviet force moved through the hills and frozen marshlands the first “trip wire” of the local defending German unit detected them. Even as the first firefights break out, the call goes out to Regimental HQ alerting them of the oncoming storm. The fact that the Soviet force is "armor heavy" requires that a "Fire Brigade" be dispatched to cope with any possible Russian breakthrough. The nearest "Fire Brigade" is made up of elements of the 1st Company of the 502nd Tiger Battalion, which includes ace Panzer Commander Captain Hans Bolter. Within minutes the crews man their panzers and are on the move, heading down the frozen roads towards the threatened sector. It is yet another call to duty in the un-ending struggle to stem the Soviet onslaught and the question is the same: Can they pull off the impossible one more time against overwhelming odds? PAW OF THE TIGER is originally from Avalon Hill's popular Squad Leader Series (Scenario #14), which I grew up on as a teen. Although the scenario was always a classic to me, it took some time to get it into a playable format for SPWAW. I hope it does service to the original and I hope that all who play it find it enjoyable and interesting. Ken
Design by Bryan “Marauder” Mel Tested by fellow Raiders: Federico Doveri and Mad Italian “Rocca” Description: Near Przemysl, Poland, September 25, 1939* By September 25, Soviet Forces were making steady progress in Poland. The Polish forces faced two options, surrender to either the Germans or Russians or attempt to escape to a neighboring neutral country. Many Polish units attempted the latter. Several miles outside the Hungarian border, the battered but defiant Polish units of Grupa Operacyia Kawalerii were pushing south to escape the advancing Russian masses. Several bitter rear guard actions were fought during this time in which Polish units held key road nets so that others might escape to the Hungarian hinterland. One such action was fought near the town of Przemysl. Russian forces engaged bitter Polish delaying tactics all day long: it was a fight where no quarter was given and none taken by either side. Bryan “Marauder” Melvin Description: Rhineland, February , 9’th 1945 Operation Veritable's objective for the allied forces was to clear the Rhineland in order to isolate German forces west of the Rhine river and to secure a staging area to cross the Rhine River at a later date. By destroying dykes and opening dams, the German's flooded the lower Rhine Valley forming an effective barrier along the Holland and German boarder. The rising floodwaters flooded villages and towns in the area. Some areas, like the village of Niel, became a fortified island midst a swallow boggy sea. In turn, the Germans defended these areas, which, if left uncontested, would provide flanking fire into any attack along the higher ground around the Reichwald forest towards the city of Goch and Calcar. This area had to be taken by British/Canadian forces for Operation Veritable to succeed. The 3rd Canadian Division was tasked to protect the left flank of the main British/Canadian thrust of Operation Veritable and take this flooded area. This involved assaulting enemy held villages that appeared as islands in the flat flooded landscape. During the night of February 9, 1945 the Canadians attacked the fortified village of Niel using the tactics they learned months earlier clearing the Scheldt Estuary where they earned the name - The Water Rats.
Design: Brent Grenadier Richards Tested by fellow Raiders: Federico Doveri and Mad Italian “Rocca” Description: Kuban Front, USSR, Sept 10, 1943 This scenario is based on the film and book "Cross of Iron" by Willi Heinrich. Steiner’s men are trapped in the factory and an engineer platoon is attacking to relievethem. The attack on the factory started with an artillery barrage that shattered the masonry exterior of the administration building. Under the cover of the barrage, Lt Marz and the rest of the company slipped through the holes in the fence and started across the wide expanse of ground. Taking the roles of the friendly forces involved, can you succeed against the oods? Wild Bill's Raiders Scenario#3:
Cross of Iron VI Design: Brent Grenadier Richards Tested by Resist and “Mad Italian” Rocca. Additional testing by Steve Avery and Jim 1954 Description: Kuban Front, USSR, Sept 24, 1943 This scenario is based on events from the film and book "Cross of Iron" by Willi Heinrich. Heinrich was a company commander of the 101 Jager Division in the Kuban bridgehead in 1943, the time the events in the film and book take place. This battle is the same as in the film. You are in a rearguard position in front of the factory. Hold your PPT VO's then withdraw into the factory and back to the exit hex through the tunnel in the factory and behind it. Look over your main characters as some, like Zoll, are armed with anti tank mines. As in some of the earlier scenarios, losing a principal character like Kruger or Steiner will cost you. Golhofer's platoon fought their way into the building after dark and linked up with Steiner's group which was holding the Russians at bay in the tunnels. Several more men were lost in the close quarters fighting before the company was able to get out. After getting out of the factory and pulling out of the city, Golhofer told Steiner he was to report to Col Brandt right away.* Note - First 4 scenarios in the Cross of Iron Series are located here Scenario#
