Tested by fellow Raiders: Bryan MARAUDER Melvin, Federico RESISTI Doveri,Harry ROCKINHARRY Zahn, Don DONDOOM Doom Description: Sicily, July, 20th 1943

After their initial landing on Sicily, US and British troops rapidly advanced across the island. After several days, resistance stiffened, mainly due to German units entering battle. While units like the division "Herrmann Goering" blocked the way north for the British, which were held south of the Etna volcano, Patton's troops managed to hold their speed on their way through western Sicily and north heading for Palermo.

Still not being on the peak of warfare the US troops soon suffered from supply problems. In order to reach Palermo as fast as possible, Patton ordered his advance elements to build smaller combat groups and press on the attack as long as some supply was available. An early taking of Palermo would have forced the Germans to use stronger defense forces here and thereby relieve the British in the east.In order to help the Italians in the west of Sicily the Germans formed ad-hoc formations to slow down the US attack and keep their ally at their side. While Hube concentrated his main forces, the "HG" Pz Div and the 15.Pz Gren Div in the east, the impressive Number of eleven Italian divisions had only limited battle value. On July 20th, several small ad-hoc formations were the only hope to stop the US forces and to prevent Patton from having breakfast in Palermo the very next morning. The most important card of the Germans was a small number of Tiger tanks of 2.Kp sPzAbt.504. Of the initial 17 Tigers on Sicily, one platoon saw combat here.

Description: Operation GRENADE, South of Duren, Germany, February 25, 1945*

On the second day of Operation GRENADE , the US 1st and 9th Armies attacked across the Roer River and established a narrow bridgehead. The 8th US Infantry Division's 1st Battalion 28th Regiment pushed out of the bridgehead to take STOCKHEIM, a small town just to the south of DUREN.

It was believed that STOCKHEIM was defended by weak German troops. Instead, STOCKHEIM was defended by various German troops including tanks and self-propelled guns. Unfortunately US armor support arrival of 740th tank battalion was delayed due to the Germans harassing the river crossings by air and artillery attacks, which delayed completion of bridge construction. Even new jet propelled attack planes were used by the Germans to strafe and bomb the bridgehead.

In the misty wet damp and muddy conditions, the US 1st Battalion 28th Infantry Regiment began its push to take STOCKHEIM. It met stiff resistance but soon ample US artillery support and air support became available later in the day and resistance was overcome at a steep cost.

Canadian advance v German delay
Turns: 10
Scenario Design: Stuart "Major Destruction" Millis

Description: Germany - February 25th, 1945

On the morning of February 19th when American forces successfully crossed the still flooded Roer River, the fate of the enemy forces was sealed. They could retreat, surrender or die. They had not the strength to withstand the advance by ten divisions of the American army. By this time Canadian forces were ahead of schedule, advancing against determined resistance behind a heavy curtain of creeping bombardments. Presumably, Field Marshall Montgomery and General Simmonds believed that the pressure of the American hrust to the south must weaken the defenses facing Canadian 1st Army. Therefore, it is interesting that Operation BLOCKBUSTER was permitted to develop into another confused battle which yielded another 4000 casualties, 2600 of them Canadian.

3rd Division was to capture the villages of Keppeln and Udem as well as the hamlets and farm buildings that were dotted around the area. The Queen's Own Rifles of Canada led off 8th Brigade's attack to quickly attain the ridge in front. The barrage would move quickly and the QOR's would have to follow close behind. On the front line was D Company. As D Company jumped off to attack its objective, D Company found, for some reason, the hamlet of Mooshof to be more difficult to take than objectives along the rest of the front.

Germany vs USSR
Turns: 18
Design: Brent Grenadier Richards

Tested by fellow Raiders, Dr Klaus Mueller-Buschbaum, Mad Italian Rocca and Resisti

Description: Mius River, USSR, July 17, 1943

With the withdrawal from the Caucasus and the Don basin following Stalingrad, the front line was re-occupied by Army Abteilung Hollidt in January 1943 along the Mius River. The ine held up against several attacks and in the spring the line was strengthened for the coming summer battles.

The land along the Mius is rocky and crossed with ravines running out from the river which was about 50 yards wide and shallow during the summer. 6th Army improved the defensive lines as best it could, using scarce timber to reinforce dugouts on the forward slopes. The river's west bank is higher that the east bank, typical of rivers in southern Russia, which allowed observation of Russian activity on the east side.

About mid July, the new German 6th Army noticed a Russian buildup in progress on the east side of the river. General Hollidt dispersed his sturmgeschutze abteilungs and artillery reserves to the most likely locations for the attack. At dawn on July 17, the air was rent by a thunderous artillery barrage on the positions of the 294 Division, focusing on the sector of the 515 Regiment. The massive Russian barrage started fires in the dry tinder among the German positions and the smoke allowed the Russians to get across the shallow river before the Germans could react. The Soviets used both massed waves of men advancing shoulder to shoulder and smaller groups infiltrating between the German strong points. Soviet aircraft bombed and strafed the German strong points and caused heavy casualties. A Red Flood was about to overflow the Mius.

This scenario illustrates the problems the German Army faced being on the defensive in Russia, with losses in infantry forcing the use of strongpoints backed by reserves to defend long stretches of the front. The backbone of the German defense was its artillery and mobile reserves, which this scenario demonstrates.

Description: Near St Lo, Normandy, July 7,1944

The Fighting in Normandy continued to stalemate. In order to break the deadlock, Platoon ized Infantry units were often tasked to take some unknown farmhouse or Hill from the enemy or hold key terrain. Thus, gains could be measured in yards or from hedgerow to hedgerow. One such nameless firefight occurred near St. Lo, Normandy, July 7, 1944. One US Infantry Platoon was ordered to take a nameless French Farm held by a German squad on the road to St Lo.

Design Note: This Spwaw scenario depicts a hypothetical firefight using individual men assigned to separate squads. The game scale is set at 10 yards per hex. This is a squad level battle that highlights small unit tactics. Nine to twelve individual men make up a squad and each is armed with their own weapon class.

Description: Dompaire, France, Sept 13, 1944

The Allies break-though in Normandy and the crossing of the Seine River coupled with the invasion of southern France in late August 1944, forced the withdrawal of the Germans to defend the German frontier. One of the withdrawing units was General Walter Haeckel's 16 Volksgrenadier Division.

On Sept 11, 1944, Haeckel's division was approaching the Moselle River near Charmes. Hackle’s division discovered that the US 45 Infantry Division and General Phillipe Leclerc’s French 2nd Armored Division had cut it off. Haeckel requested permission to break out of the pocket but was, as usual, denied the request by Hitler, who instead ordered the 16th be relieved. Two brand new, untried units, the 111 and 112 Panzer Brigades, and a Kampfgruppe from the veteran 21st Panzer Division would make the relief attempt.

General Phillipe Leclerc, the liberator of Paris, was well informed of the German intentions by Resistance members. He ordered on Sept 13 a combat group under Col Langlade to cut behind the Germans between the town of Dompaire and the city of Epinal on the Moselle, isolating the 112 Panzer Brigade. Your job is to take the role of Col Massu and destroy the German relief attack. Can you handle it?

Orders to the German Commander: At 1500 Hours on December 31st, a Romanian security unit that was trying to retreat to our new defensive lines in this sector was attacked by the Soviets. The lead Romanian elements were first smashed by air strikes that clogged the roads. Then ground forces attacked the main body, which has pinched off the escape route. For political as well as military reasons, it is of the utmost importance that we make an attempt to re-open a "corridor" for the Romanians to retreat through.Unfortunately our own forces are meager at best. As of 1000 Hours January 1st, we will be able to give you a half dozen panzers and a panzergrenadier platoon to conduct the opening phase of the operation. Once your force has made an opening in the Russian lines a second infantry platoon is scheduled to arrive and bolster your lead units ability to hold the objective area. This Operation will be called: "Westliches Licht" can you open the corridor and allow our Romanian allies a chance to escape?

Description: Yenangyaung, Burma, April 20, 1942

General Joseph "Vinegar Joe" Stillwell and the American Advisory forces arrived in early 1942 to a most difficult situation. It was immediately apparent that the Japanese were investing a sizeable amount of manpower to the conquest of Burma. And with good reason! Burma and other countries in Asia offered a wealth of raw materials for the continuation of the war. Without them, Japan had no hopes of finalizing its control of the Far East. Another subtle danger was that of India falling, which would open an avenue of advance by Japanese forces all the way to the Middle East. Such an event would be catastrophic to the Allied efforts. Once in action, Stillwell conferred with British General Alexander and then went into action. With no possible hope for any sort of counterattacks in strength, Stillwell hoped to stabilize a defensive line near the border with India and allow Allied forces to be strengthened.

The Japanese were not about to let that happen. Their advance was unrelenting. The conflict between Chinese and British commanders worsened the situation. At Yenangyaung, the 1st Burma Division was nearly cut off except for the timely intervention of the 3rd Chinese Regiment (38th Division). In order to "save face," the British press would later speak of the skillful withdrawal of the Burmese Division and make no mention of the Chinese coming to their rescue. It was just another political maneuver that increased the problems in the CBI Theater of War

Description: February 19, 1945 - The Rhineland, Germany

By late February 1945 the battle for the Reichswald continued to drag on. One British operation after another ground to a halt as an early spring thawed the frozen ground that lay between the Maas and Rhine rivers. Recent cold rains and thaws had turned the ground into a miry muddy mess. To the west of the town of Udem lay a slight rising ridgeline. From this ridgeline, the German defenders could bring devastating fire on units advancing along the only paved road in the area: The Goch-Calcar road. This ridge had to be taken.

As the final objective of Operation "Veritable" and in preparation for Operation "Blockbuster", the Canadian 4th Infantry Brigade was ordered to seize this ridgeline near Schwanenhoff Farm. The Royal Hamilton Light Infantry began their trek towards the objective, with A and B Companies mounted in Kangaroo APC's and with armour support from B Squadron of the Fort Garry Horse Regiment. For the Germans of the 6th Fallschirmjager Division defending the ridgeline, it was just another day of survival. These weary German defenders were stretched to the limit. Where companies were needed to hold the line, only platoons filled the gaps. The greatest advantage the Germans had were the 88 Flak/AT guns and the soon arrival of elements of the Panzer Lehr Division.

When Canadian tanks of the Fort Garrys began their advance across the miry mud, a hail of fire from deadly 88cm Flak/AT Guns met them. Four tanks of the lead troop exploded in succession as the Canadian infantry pressed ahead. Smoke and artillery helped to quell the German fire. Schwanenhoff Farm exchanged sides throughout the 19th in bloody hand-to-hand combat. It was not until February 26, 1945 that Schwanenhoff Farm finally fell to the intrepid Canadians.

Description: Klin, USSR, Dec 10, 1941

The Soviet counteroffensive at Moscow took the Germans by surprise and found them ill prepared for defending the gains made since the start of Operation Typhoon. Soon the entire front of Army Group Center was under attack by the Soviet forces marshaled by General Zhukov.

3rd Panzer Group commanded by General Georg-Hans Reinhardt was the most exposed, having advanced all the way to the Moscow-Volga Canal at Dmitrov and Yakhroma north west of the capital where a kampfgruppe from 7th Panzer Division under Col Hasso von Manteuffel has seized a bridgehead on the east bank. The attacks by the Soviet 29th and 31st Armies to the north and of 30th and 1st Shock Armies to the south of Reinhardt's panzergruppe forced the divisions of the group to withdraw from the canal and defend the vital town of Klin, which was soon outflanked to the north and south.

At the same time the weather broke and the temperatures dropped suddenly to well below freezing, paralyzing the exhausted Germans who were still in their threadbare summer uniforms. Much of the heavy equipment and guns had to be abandoned when their transport failed or the guns got frozen into the ground and the roads towards Klin became filled with the detritus of the hasty retreat. Only the Russian panje wagons with their large wheels could be assured of negotiating through the deep snowdrifts that covered the roads.

By the beginning of December, 6th Panzer Division was down a handful of tanks to lead the advance towards Moscow. By the end of the week, it was down to its last tank, a Pz 35T nicknamed "Anthony the Last". The division was struggling to cover the withdrawal of 3rd Panzer Group through Klin before it was cut off and "Anthony" was doing it's best to protect the withdrawing columns from marauding bands of Russian ski patrols and tanks. It finally broke down on December 10 outside of Klin, which was abandoned a few days later.

Description: Poland, 26th August 1939, 0400 hours

The German attack on Poland was initially planned to start on August the 26th 1939. In advance of the first wave of invasion troops, several commandos of the Brandenburgers were intended to take control of vital points like bridges and crossroads in order to ensure a rapid advance through the Polish border defenses. The so-called "Deutsche Kompanie" (German Company) and the "KG Ebbinghaus" had orders to take the Jablunka pass, a railroad pass through a mountainous region in south Poland. KG Ebbinghaus mostly consisted of volunteer Sudeten-Germans that joined the Brandenburgers after the Czech overnment had to give the Sudetenland away in 1938. KG Ebbinghaus had highly motivated, though mere militiamen mostly depending on the well-trained Brandenburgers that reinforced them. Around midnight of August 25th 1939, Olt (1st Lt) Dr. Herzner and his men advanced to the Jablunka pass, led by some local German guides. The Polish posts, that had been spotted successfully, had to be taken out carefully to ensure control of the pass without anyone escaping to warn the Polish forces around the railway station of Mosty, a few km behind the pass. Hitler's order to stop "Operation White" came too late to reach the Brandenburgers. As a result, Dr. Herzner and his men started their own private war against the Polish army with no panzer division to follow thereafter.

Description: Sumilong, Philippine Island, Luzon, December 22,1941

In the dark days following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the Japanese began their invasion of Luzon Island. Landing in several areas in the North and South, the Japanese army began probing inland.

In the south, along the Timbuyo Peninsula, a battalion of Japanese from the Kimura Detachment began moving toward Manila along the coastal Highway of Route 1. At this point, Luzon is only seven miles wide and offered the best defense against an enemy advance. The seven-mile wide area was divided by Steep Mountain ranges and only along the coastal areas offered any room for maneuver.

Companies B and C of the Philippine 52nd Infantry were sent to block the Japanese advance. The 52nd Infantry was made up of well-trained and well-armed troops. B Company took up positions along Route 1 near the village of Sumilong and set up ambushpositions. They did not have long to wait.In a feat of arms unsurpassed in these dark and dreary days for the Allies, Company B of the Philippine 52nd Infantry inflicted a major defeat on the Japanese and pushed them back seven miles.

Description: Near Pinikovo, USSR - August 17, 1941

The German drive towards Leningrad depended on securing the Leningrad Highway. The Russians set up a strongpoint around the city of Luga thus blocking the highway. To take Luga, the Germans planned to capture this strongpoint from the North. Units from the 409th Infantry Regiment were ordered to cross the Oredezh River and secure the village of Pinikovo.

The river crossing proceeded well and soon elements of Battalion I, 409 Infantry Regiment, moved out towards the village of Pinikovo. The Russian's had other ideas. They set up an ambush for the advancing German units. Striking Battalion I exposed flanks, the Russians surrounded mixed elements from Battalion I and began to hunt down the German defenders with infanty/tank teams. The German's had little choice but to collect its units, form a Hedgehog defense, and await reinforcements which came later in the form of three StuG assualt guns. Soon the hunters were to become the hunted.

Description: Liri Valley, Melfa River, Italy – May 23, 1944

As the Canadian forces advanced up the Liri Valley in Italy, the Germans set up one defensive line after another in order to delay the Allies. The Hitler Line was one such line that held the Canadian forces at bay. However, it was thinly manned. On May 22/23rd the Canadians broke through the Hitler line. Thus the stage was set for many brief and violent encounters between adversaries: one advancing while the other fought to delay.

On 23 May, verbal orders were issued to 5th Canadian Infantry Div to pass through the gap made by 1st Canadian Infantry Division, but rain and difficult tracks prevented an advance that night. Major-General B.M. Hoffmeister, 5th Canadian Infantry Div, issued orders that 5th Canadian Infantry Brigade Group would advance to the River Melfa and secure crossingsthere on May 24. They were to set up a covering position for the passage of 11th Canadian Infantry Brigade over the river Melfa. The Irish Regiment of Canada was placed under command of 5th Canadian Infantry Brigade for this phase. The 2 Canadian Armored Regiment Companies A and B were to led the way, cross the River Melfa, and secure a bridgehead there.

Both A and B Companies reached the river. After crossing the Melfa "A" Company had been subjected to counter-attacks supported by a Varity of armor vehicles and had suffered heavy casualties amounting the fifty percent of those taking part. Major J.K. Mahony, commanding "A" Company, later received the V.C. for his gallant leading of his Company in this action. "B" Company, which had crossed further up the river, ran into considerableopposition and after several hours fighting was ordered to withdraw.

By December 19, 1944 the Battle of the Bulge continued in all its fury. In the Northern sector, along Route N 15 lay the important Baraque de Fraiture crossroads. The Germans sent in the 2nd SS Panzer Division to take this key road junction. Meanwhile, the US forces were slowly withdrawing from the area. Major Arthur C. Parker III noted the extreme importance of the crossroads and led three 105mm howitzers and rallied retreating US troops to man a roadblock at Baraque de Fraiture.

Next day, December 20th, four AA Halftracks and troops from the 87th Cavalry Squadron reinforced Major Parker's roadblock. By December 22nd, Company F of the 325th Glider egiment was sent to reinforce Parker's command. During these tense days, elements of the 2nd SS Panzer Division spared with the American's at the crossroads and managed to surround them.

Hampered by fuel shortages, the German's had to wait till December 23rd to mount a coordinate attack on Baraque de Fraiture crossroads. At 1605 Hours, the Germans pounded the crossroad defenses with a twenty-minute artillery bombardment. After the barrage, the entire rifle strength of the 4th Panzer Regiment supported by armor began their final assault on the crossroads. Description: June 29, 1941, 0900 hours, Bialovitz forest

During first months of Barbarossa many Russians divisions that were under pressure from the German Werhmacht, simply routed and dissolved. The most determined men of these routed and dissolved divisions sought cover in the hills and large thick forests where they resisted the German invaders tenaciously. This was the destiny of the Russian 4th Armored Division of General Potaturcev.

The rests of his division sought for cover in Bialoviz Forest, determined not to surrender. Tough the division didn't exist anymore as a whole its remnants were still a danger for German advancing troops. The German 78th Infantry Division was ordered to enter the forest and clear it of any enemy presence; at the same time elements of the 17th Divisionwere taking position along the northern border of the area in order to cut any possible way of retreat.

This task turned out to be much harder than expected: Russians were masters in close, hand to hand combat and German troops soon learned this the hard way. It took days and hundreds of dead and wounded for the 78th to mop up Russian resistance in the forest. From now on German troops would approach the Russian forests in a different way, from now on.

FIRE AND ICE - Part One

USA vs North Korea

Design: John “Redleg” Rank

Description: Near Osan, Korea, July 5, 1950

The first combat of U.S. Troops in the Korean War took place on July 5, 1950 about 20 miles from Seoul. The on rushing North Korean army had taken Seoul. It was decided to send units from the U.S. 24th Division to delay the North Korean advance and to bolster sagging spirits of the South Korean army that was being decimated.

LTC Smith, was the officer in command of the 2 reinforced companies of 1st Bn, 21st infantry regiment which were sent forward to meet the on-rushing North Koreans near Osan. In addition, A 105mm battery of 1st battalion, 52nd field artillery was sent. The battalion commander, Ltc Perry, decided to accompany the battery in this operation. This small force was also augmented by 4.2 inch mortars and 75mm recoilless rifles. Due to a bizarre shortage of armor piercing 105mm ammo, the battery only had 6 rounds of anti-tank ammo.

LTC Smith went forward to select the location that companies B and C would use for the expected battle. The position chosen had hills on both flanks of the highway. The U.S.troops were brought forward and dug-in positions created on the hills. One howitzer was laid in an anti-tank role and given 6 AP rounds of ammo. One other howitzer was laid to protect a flank. Four howitzers were laid and registered for indirect fire support.

Take command of "Task Force Smith" and delay the North Korean advance. Hang on for 12 turns and victory is quite likely. Since the real battle was not considered a victory for the U.S., the term is used loosely here. If you can do enough damage to the on coming N. Koreans in the scenario, there will likely be enough points to score a victory in the game.

In the last days of January 1945 the Red Army attacked the German lines along the Oder River. The goal of this Offensive was the city of Breslau and the important industrial areas of Silesia. Preiskerwitz is a small town on the banks of the Oder River, about 10 Kilometres north-west of Breslau where strong Soviet forces crossed the river. The town was defended by Kampfgruppe Speckmann. These Volkssturm soldiers were unable to withstand the assault across the river. Soviet troops managed to grab a foothold in the town and the wooded ridge south of it. In the evening of January 28th the 11.SS company was sent tosupport KG Speckmann and hold Preiskerwitz. Speckmann's Soldiers were exhausted and dispirited. They managed to immobilise a Soviet tank in the town but had spent all their Panzerfaust’s. With one more tank about to rampage through the town and the sound of more tank engines approaching from the east the situation was all but desperate. It was up to the volunteers of 11th company to hold the line against the "red tide".

USA vs Germany

Design: Bryan Marauder Melvin

Description: Near Remagen, Germany, March, 1945

By late March 1945 the situation in Germany became critical as the US 9th Armored Division crossed the Rhine river at Remagen. US forces began to expand the bridgehead into the interior of Germany. The US 9th Armored Division sent recon elements to probe and scout ahead of the main force. As they did so, the German reaction was to send recon forces to stop the Americans from exploiting the Rhine river crossing at Remagen until sufficient forces could be brought in. On the Misty Moist morning of March 30, two opposing recon elements clashed east of Ramagen, Germany, in a wild melee of mayhem and maneuver.

Description: 0500 hours, July 18, 1918, Near Missy-Aux-Bois, France

At 0500 hours, July 18, 1918, the U.S. 2nd battalion, 16th infantry regiment was advancing. The objective was the town of Missy-Aux-Bois and the high ground to the North. Having reached the previous objectives, the battalion continued the advance in the early morning mist and fog. Visibility was quite limited in places. B and D companies were the assault companies with A and C in support. In the poor visibility, contact with the support companies and battalion HQ was lost. Therefore, artillery support was not possible. As the two companies approached their objectives, strong German resistance was encountered and further advance was not possible. Then, to the surprise of all concerned, several French tanks appeared on the scene. The U.S. commander quickly coordinated with the Lt. in command of the French tanks to provide the much-needed fire support necessary to continue the attack.

Germany vs Belgium

Description: May 20, 1940, Somewhere in Belgium

May 20, 1940. The German Blitzkrieg is overwhelming Western Europe. Belgium has been invaded some days ago, and its armies are already falling back towards their secondary defensive lines. Securing bridges over the rivers is all-important to the Germans in order to keep the momentum in their surge southwards. In this scenario, German forces attempt to secure a bridge over the River Dyle with a Fallschirmsjaeger attack. The Belgians, totally surprised, do not manage to destroy the bridge before the Jaegers remove the hidden charges. The Fallschirmsjaegers dig in around the bridge, determined to not let go of it until the armoured spearhead reaches them.

Their task will not be easy. In a village nearby is a reserve Belgian Chasseur force, supported by armoured cars and tanks, who are very eager to answer the call for aid issued by their brothers-in-arms initially defending the village.

Germany vs Poland
Design: Brent "Grenadier" Richards

Description: Polish Corridor, September 1,1939

Unlike the later blitzkreigs, the Polish campaign, Fall Weiss(Operation White), was not the walkover many have come to believe. The Poles fought hard and tenaciously to stop the German attack. Nowhere was this more evident than on the border of the Corridor between Germany and East Prussia. In one location alone near Mlawa, the Kempf Panzer Division lost 72 tanks on the first day. The Corridor defenses proved tough and the German soldiers, especially the ones in the last divisions raised, the 3rd and 4th wave divisions, were rresolute, illustrating the unreadiness of the Army for war. As they crossed the shell cratered ground they came under accurate mortar and machine gun fire. A line of bunkers was in front of them, unscathed. The inexperienced artillery had fired too short, leaving the bunkers unsuppressed.

Germany vs USSR

Description: Olschany, Northwest of Kharkov, August 12, 1943.

The Soviet Union launched their summer offensive, "Rumyantsev" on Aug 4 when Voronezh & Steppe Front's attacked the weakened 4th Panzer Army of General Hermann Hoth & the Kempf Armeegruppe around Belgorod, tearing a 25 mile gap between the 2 German Armies. Belgorod fell on Aug 5 and the Soviet forces, led by 5th Guards Tank Army under General Rodmistrov, captured Bogodukov on Aug 7, 62 miles from their start line and approached the vital road and rail lines supplying the Kempf Armee around Kharkov, threatening Kempf with encirclement.

The 6 and 11 Panzer Divisions slowed Rodmistrov's attacks to the west of the city, giving time for von Manstein to bring up the 3 divisions on the Mius front, SS Das Reich, SS Totenkopf and 3 Panzer, to set up a defensive perimeter to the north of the vital lines of communication. Manstein plans on a counterattack to close the gap between Hoth and Kempf, but first has to break the Soviet attack towards the rail lines supplying Kharkov.

Rodmistrov's brigades advance to the south meeting only light resistance from German rearguard units. He is unaware that A kampfgruppe of the veteran 3rd Panzer Division's 394th Panzergrenadier Rgt has been ordered to defend the rollbahn near the town of Olschany supported by tanks from 6th Panzer Rgt. 3rd Panzer had arrived during the night and has dug in in front of his Army in well camoflaged positions north of the rollbahn.

Oberst Gunter Pape, the 394th commander, watches as the Soviet armada advances through the open fields, the sunflowers flattening in the front of the T-34's like an invisible reaper was in front of the tanks. He knew he would not be able to deal with this attack without reinforcements and he called General Westhoven, his division commander, to request them. Westhoven replied he would send what he could, a company of Tigers from 503 Schwere Panzer Abteilung, a battery of 88mm Nashorns from the attached 560 Schwere Jagdpanzer Abteilung and some pioneers. Pape counted the tanks as they approached, 10, 20, 30. He stopped counting as the first of the tanks reached the edge of the sunflower field.

The rollbahn is now within sight of the lead tanks, which have been suffering from continuous mortar, artillery and nebelwerfer strikes. All that is between them and the rollbahn is the scattered woods and the town of Olschany. It looks like Kharkov was going to fall into their hands like a ripe friut.
