First CMX2 Details at IGN

COMMUNITY NEWS posted on 18 AUG 2004 by Chris Abele

The game site has the first information on the Combat Mission sequel.

It's no secret to wargamers that Battlefront is working on an all-new version of Combat Mission, codenamed CMX2, but up until today, the developer has been almost entirely silent on the subject. IGN broke that silence late last night with the first details on the engine which power the next Combat Mission title. This new game will follow in the footsteps of the three past games, Combat Mission: Beyond Overlord, Combat Mission: Barbarrossa to Berlin, and Combat Mission: Afrika Korps. It will still use its established "I go, you go" play system, with the game's environments rendered in 3D, but the theater of operations has yet to be decided.

While IGN's preview article is the first to offer up information directly from Battlefront, it does not contain many definitive details on the new game. The preview largely discusses the developer's goals and how they're applying learned lessons when designing this new game engine. Interestingly, they are spending significant time on sky and horizon effects, such as the position of the sun according to the scenario's time of the year and its relative distance to the equator or poles, and a potential star skymap, as well as new terrain graphics and fully 3D environmental elements.

As the preview acknowledges, there's still a lot of design and detail left to work out for the team at Battlefront. There is no ETA on the game's completion, let alone a basic feature listing, so don't expect CMX2 anytime soon.
