New players will soon be able to play without subscription.
Sony Online announced over the weekend new plans to keep its MMOFPS (massively multiplayer online first-person shooter) going some three years after its initial release. PlanetSide (review) will soon offer new players the opportunity to create a new account and play it for free for a period of 12 months. However, that account will be limited to a certain experience level (BattleRank 8 and CommandRank 2), so once a player becomes actively involved in the game, the game's $12.95 per month subscription will begin to apply. To support these players, SOE will also open its New Player Training program, which will demonstrate how to play to ease the game's considerable learning curve.
"We’re going to change that in hopes of getting new players/characters into battle within a couple minutes of entering the game at the same time teaching them how to play. You may or may have not noticed that we have implemented 2 new saved favorites just recently to equip new players with a load-out much quicker."These new programs are expected to be launched in mid-February.
