IntroductionI’ll say it right now: Deus Ex is undoubtedly the best gaming experience I’ve had in a long while, and is instantly in my “Top 25 Games of All Time” list (maybe even the top ten). From the much beleaguered developer Ion Storm, Deus Ex proves that a phoenix can rise from the ashes (Daikatana is now officially a “bad dream”). Featuring an intriguing storyline and a highly interactive universe, populated with literally hundreds of characters, this game has preceded “eating” and “sleeping” on my “things to do” list. “Agent Denton , You Haven’t Much Time…”
Main Entry: de-us ex ma-chi-na
In Deus Ex, the player assumes the identity of Agent J.C. Denton, brother of highly regarded Agent Paul Denton. The Dentons are part of a division of the UN known as UNATCO (United Nations Anti-Terrorist Coalition). J.C. is one of a new series of nano-augmented operatives, meaning that he has surgically implanted nanotechnology (teeny tiny gizmos) to improve his performance. His nano-augmentations (or “augs” for short) affect everything from J.C.’s visual acuity to his manual dexterity. Throughout the course of the game, J.C. can be upgraded selectively by the player, and trained through the use of skill points to become proficient in a variety of handy skills (to be described in more detail later). As the story progresses, J.C. seems to be following his brother’s footsteps to greatness, but… is something out of place? Why is the past so cloudy, and the future so grim? Who or what is Majestic 12? Is the international viral plague known as the Gray Death everything it appears to be? During the search for answers, J.C. will travel all over the world, as an intricate conspiracy is painstakingly uncovered. In the words of a mysterious stranger known only as “Daedalus”: “You must not fail.”
