Airborne Assault

Introduction

In September 1944, the Allied armies stood on the verge of totally routing the German army in northern Europe. The Allies were advancing at an amazing pace, sometimes covering 100km a day in hopes of denying the Germans the safety of the Rhine and their West Wall defenses. Operation Market Garden was conceived with this in mind. It was to provide a bridgehead across the Rhine, bypassing the West Wall defenses and opening up Germany's industrial heartland to the Allied forces. Market Garden was the brainchild of British General Bernard Montgomery. It was both a bold and risky plan that required precise timing in order to succeed. Allied paratroops would capture a series of bridges and thus opening up a corridor for ground forces to exploit. The main objectives were the bridges over the Rhine at the Dutch town of Arnhem. If secured, these bridges would provide a gateway into Germany and perhaps ending the war by Christmas.

Airborne Assault is a real-time operational wargame that focuses on the desperate battle for the Rhine bridges in and around Arnhem. The player can command either the British or German forces on a 2D, top-down map of the Arnhem area. The game comes with a variety of historical and "what if" scenarios and campaigns, which can be further, modified by changing reinforcement schedules or weather. The map size varies depending on the scenario selected but can range up to about 625 square km in the campaign or down to around 144 square km in some of the smaller battles.

Installation and Technical Issues

The game setup was easy, taking up about 550MB for a complete install. The player also has the option of a smaller install of around 130MB but it is not recommended due to its effect on game performance. There were no technical problems either installing or running the game.

Documentation

When I got Airborne Assault I was pleasantly surprised to find it came with a comprehensive 241 page, printed manual. It contains tutorials, a history of Operation Market Garden, complete orders of battle, terrain and combat charts, an index, and of course an in-depth look at game functions and commands with screenshots. It is a true work of art. This is how a wargame manual should be done. It is a pleasure to read and it thoroughly enhances the gaming experience.
