Steam to run digital table-top event next month to celebrate the fusion of board & videogames

Valve are hosting an event at the end of October to celebrate the fusion of digital and physical games with panels, speaker sessions and even some live streams. It’s being run in conjunction with UK-based studio Auroch Digital, who you may remember from the digital adaptations of OGRE and Achtung! Cthulhu Tactics. They even once upon a time partnered with Slitherine to release a game called The Last Days of Old Earth.

In terms of speakers, the event will be honoured by the presence of Sandy Petersen (Cthulhu Wars etc.), Steve Jackson (Ogre, Triplanetary etc.), Games Workshop co-founder Ian Livingstone, Elizabeth Hargrave (creator of Wingspan) and author Simon Parkin, who will be doing a talk on how a board game helped the allies win WW2.

In terms of live streams, there will be coverage of Plague Inc. (both the physical and the digital version), Gloomhaven and even a panel on the subject of ‘Mars’. Showrunners Auroch Digital are currently making a space agency sim titled Mars Horizon where the ultimate goal is to colonise the red planet.

There are going to be more events announced as we get close to the time. Valve’s summed up their new festival as:

The Steam Digital Tabletop Fest features games that run across the lines between digital and physical games; this can be a digital port of a physical game, a game which has produced a physical version from the digital one, a game that simulates the physical play experience, or a digital game whose aesthetics are inspired by tabletop games.

We imagine the event will also coincide with a big sale across relevant games available via Steam. Hopefully we’ll see some war board game representation as well - Playdek for example have done some stellar work porting GMT Games to digital, so hopefully they’ll want to get involved too.

The Steam Digital Tabletop Fest will be running between October 21st through October 26th.
