Avalon Digital's Winter War launches on Steam

Avalon Digital's new wargame, Winter War, launches on Steam today in early access. Recreating a specific conflict from WW2, Winter War follows the Soviet invasion of Finland that occurred between the dates of November 1939 and March 1940. You must either take on the role of the Soviet juggernaut, or the small republic of Finland.

As either side, the objective varies - Finland hopes to hold out long enough against the invasion that the other encroaching allies will discourage Soviet activity in the region, whereas the Soviet Union wants to crush Finnish resistance as quickly as possible.

But both have their strengths and weaknesses, and counterpoint each other in terms of playstyle. The Soviet Union has a far larger military force, with significant reinforcements, but they are both poorly led, and ill-equipped. Finland, on the other hand, has a professional army that is able to take advantage of strong defensive positions, but they are far fewer in number.

Each game will take place over 16 turns, each one representing a single week during the conflict. It's a classic David vs. Goliath story.

Winter War also uses event cards to add an aspect of replayability to the game. These cards will provoke dilemmas and disasters in the campaign, necessitating diplomatic, military, economic, or political action.

If this sounds like your kind of wargame, you can out more from Winter War's Steam page, or you can visit the Avalon Digital website.
