Why not just play ???Achtung Spitfire??? on a Mac or Win98 emulator? That was a great game, same subject matter, the interface was excellent and also based on a series of great board games. It???s also free (at this point).

To the author: Great article, and makes want to dust off HOI3 actually.

Can you suggest what Mods and DLC (for HOI3) to run for someone who's looking for a lot less sandbox and a lot more historical narrative, within which I can make different Operational decisions?

Incredible game. Seriously, you don't even have to care about WH40k to love this game. It's made me appreciate just how deep and interesting the underlying miniatures game was.

Playing the tutorial on my little Dell Venue 8 Pro tablet and I can tell you it's a masterful job so far. Runs beautifully (as if it's on an iPad Air 2 or so) and easy to use. These Playdek guys have good programmers.
