Paradox is having a pretty good year. On top of great expansions for existing games like Europa Universalis IV and Cities: Skylines, they've also released the pretty fantastic Stellaris and...

Is there a review coming for this game? I haven't played any of the previous Hearts of Iron titles but it looks like a game I would enjoy. But I'm a little confused about what type of game this is. I read words like real-time engine and real-time simulation and I think RTS but the screenshot looks more like tiles and units in a turn-based strategy game. I enjoy the occasional RTS like Company of Heroes but I much prefer TBS games.

You could check this out to get a good idea about the game :

I would call this a grand strategy game (like Europa Universalis, Crusader kings, ..) and certainly not an RTS.
While it is real time you can pause and give orders as much as you want.

And this is one of the better let's plays/tutorials of the game : https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=P ... S1hvUIflCL

Yeah, I'm reviewing it but it's difficult without a real manual. The RTS element is that the clock is always running in terms of resources, construction, AI actions, etc. Having said that, players control the speed and orders can be given when paused. Nothing new in terms of time for Paradox games.

Yeah, I'm reviewing it but it's difficult without a real manual.
They have mentioned on the forums that they chose not to make a manual (for the moment) because they changed so much up to the release date that the manual would be immediately outdated. They chose to rely on the wiki but (as with Stellaris) even this wiki is far from complete for the moment.

I found (once again) youtube channels as a better and necessary source of information (but this makes me spend more time watching then playing).
HOIV is a good game but the lack of documentation is a major problem.

I hear that. I'm very used to Paradox but, as you said, I've spent as much time on Youtube as playing the game.

Very good video that could function as an alternative to a manual : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iHSoFCc1ozo
