Since we're more than halfway through the centennial of World War I, I feel a look at videogames for the 1914-1918 period is in order.

Commander The Great War gets my vote.

It manages to capture the anxieties of the initial German push in the West in 1914. Germany can very badly damage France in this game, but must do most of it's damage in 1914. A few "stumbles" and the German momentum is lost, and Germany never gets another good chance in the West.

Like all WWI games though, much depends on what happens in 1914-either Germany does well and the game obviously tilts in its favor or there is a long, 4 year slog.

I agree but I would go with SC WW I/Breakthrough. Similar UI and mechanics but more scenarios.

Yes it has.

Joe wanted to do a refresh on the article given we are near the end of the 100th anniversary. He asked me to collaborate with him on an update given the original author had recently passed.

Commander The Great War has the worst AI I have ever seen from a strategic computer game. You have to essentially leave certain objectives wide open or it will never take them and lose the war in the first 6 months.

No Wings Over Flanders Fields? I can't think of another singleplayer WW1 game that comes close to WOFF dynamic campaign. I don't know if I can think of a more immersive wargame experience I've had than hearing the boom of artillery get steadily louder and more intense as I fly closer to the front in that game.

Battle for Empires:1914-1918? Not on the list, kind of like "Men of War" meets World War 1. Been on Steam for a good long while.

I would much appreciate any tips on which WW1 games (tabletop or computer) allow different choices of grand strategy from how events unfolded; for instance, Germany resisting the urge for unrestrained sub attacks in 1917. Anyone know? Thank you!
