There was this famous, or infamous, instance of a fleet beeing taken by Cavalry. When the revolutionary French were conqouring the Seven United Provinces (aka The Netherlands), the fleet was anchored near Texel, opposite but normaly out of reach from Helder, the principal Dutch naval base. However, as the winter was oe of the worst on record, the Waddenzee, between Helder and Texel, was frozen, so the fench cavalry gallopped across the ice, to claim the ships. Although, to be fair, most of the crew was in (heated and thus warm) winter quarters in Helder anyway.
