I went to Sir Walter Scott and found that he was appointed his first commission as second lieutenant in the regiment of La Fere in Valence, but I couldn't find any detail on what he trained in at the Ecole-Militaire. He did stand out in mathematics, but not in languages. He favored Plutarch!

Love this contest, thanks!

He left as a second class lieutenant in the artillery, with a commission to join the La F??re regiment in Valence.

Already more than 10 answers but he was trained at Brienne on Artillery, marine and Military engineering. Went over to Brienne where he is supposed to join Marine but ends up in Artillery.
