It's not too often we hear about a new tabletop RPG that genuinely doesn't look like any we've seen before - but R Talsorian Games' new title Fossilized Violence caught us out of left field. Creator James Hutt tells us he's been working flat out on the 200-page core book for over a year, but few juicy details of the game have been shared online (beyond, er, 'DINOSAURS!'). Until now, that is - because Hutt is joining us live on Discord this week to answer all your questions on Fossilized Violence!
Our list of the all time best tabletop RPGs covers a lot of genres, settings, and characters, from Wookiees to Soviet fighter pilots - but as of yet it contains zero explicitly dinosaur focused games. Thunder Lizards roam in various D&D settings, and in 13th Age too - but those are games with dinosaurs in them, not dinosaur games.
By comparison, James Hutt tells Wargamer: "Fossilized Violence is a TRPG born from my desire to play with my plastic dinosaurs, on my game table, in a violent TRPG about hunting dinosaurs while pretending to be cavemen."
If that piques your interest and/or startled curiosity as much as it did ours, join us in the free Wargamer Discord community this Thursday to ask Hutt anything you like about the game, his work at R Talsorian, and Talsorian Presents, the studio's new indie RPG incubator programme!
It all kicks off at 11.30am ET / 8.30am PT / 4.30pm GMT on Thursday, December 4 in our Discord - if you haven't joined yet, hit that big button above and hop aboard! It's a brilliant tabletop gaming community, fast approaching 4,000 members, where we're chatting about all our favorite games every day. We also run regular AMAs like this one, painting competitions, giveaways, and lots more nerdy funtimes besides.
Hutt is an R Talsorian veteran that's worked extensively on the teams running both Cyberpunk RED and The Witcher RPG, so as passion projects go, we can be confident there's experience and expertise behind this one. This is actually the second senior R Talsorian Games designer we've had live in the Discord! If you want a taste of what you can expect in the AMA, check out the full video of our Shadow Scar AMA with Cody Pondsmith, below.
Oh, and one quick PSA: yes, James Hutt is well aware that humans and dinosaurs didn't co-exist (we asked him). But, as for exactly how the game's fiction accommodates the "cavemen vs. dinosaurs" trope, we don't yet know. So, if you're a pedantic paleontologist itching to fact check, you should most definitely come along and pick Hutt's brains. Just don't be surprised if the answer is 'because it's cool'.
See you on Thursday, fellow dino hunters! Make sure to bring lots of throwing spears, that T-Rex looks like it has a heck of a lot of HP…
