The Legend of Vox Machina Season 4 is out now on Amazon Prime! The fourth outing for Critical Role's smash hit animated D&D series is (of course) another high-stakes adventure of world-ending proportions, with new story developments for our cast of lovable fantasy heroes along the way. This guide sets you up with what to know before watching - including the set-up of the story, the key trailers, and when the original Vox Machina season 4 release date was.

Vox Machina season 4 plot introduction
In the closing scenes of season 3's 12th and final episode, we saw the Vox Machina crew split up into groups, ready to head off on their own personal quests.
Scanlan and his daughter Kaylie were setting off on a planned world tour as a family. Vax meant to accompany Keyleth as she returned to the Fire Ashari for her Aramenté, and the newly coupled Percy and Vex were heading to Whitestone with Gilmore to spend Winter's Crest with Lady Cassandra. Lastly, it looked like Pike and Grog were sticking together after all that, with plans unknown (beyond fucking shit up, of course).
Beyond that general parting of the ways, the S3 finale gave us one major clue as to what to expect next. The last few seconds showed us hooded cultists in a Ziggurat, chanting about sight, voice, heart, and blood - along with some distinctly summoning-esque magical lightning.
Fans of the original Critical Role campaigns already knew what that meant: the Whispered One, A.K.A. the copyright-safe version of Vecna, was on the horizon. And the sneak peek trailer confirmed back in July 2025 that Vox Machina are on the trail of the elusive Whispered One in season 4.
Which Critical Role campaign is Vox Machina Season 4 based on?
Vox Machina season four is based on the first half of the final arc of Critical Role's first campaign. This was clear in early trailers by the presence of new character Taryon Darrington.
Taryon has his own 15-episode story arc in campaign one, where he temporarily joins Vox Machina for a series of side quests. These explore Vox Machina's members in more depth, and, in season four, they'll likely set up the cataclysmic storyline to come.
That storyline starts in campaign one's fifth and final story arc, where The Whispered One makes his diabolical plans known. Vox Machina are uniquely suited to the job of thwarting the lich, and the resulting quests see them travel to Elysium, a volcano at the bottom of the sea, and an undead dwarven metropolis, to name but a few destinations - before facing off in an epic final fight.
Since we know that Vox Machina season 5 has been confirmed, we can expect the final story arc to stretch across seasons 4 and 5. That leaves us open to some devastating cliffhangers!

Vox Machina season 4 cast
The core Vox Machina season 4 cast are:
- Liam O'Brien as Vax'ildan 'Vax' Vessar.
- Taliesin Jaffe as Percival 'Percy' De Rolo.
- Ashley Johnson as Pike Trickfoot.
- Matthew Mercer as Trinket.
- Marisha Ray as Keyleth.
- Travis Willingham as Grog Strongjaw.
- Sam Riegel as Scanlan Shorthalt.
- Wayne Brady as Taryon Darrington.
Taryon is a new addition to the Vox Machina crew. In the original Critical Role campaign, Taryon Darrington briefly joined up with Vox Machina while Scanlan was away on personal business. Taryon is a privileged Artificer, idealistic but with a good heart.
We first assumed that Riegel would voice Taryon, as he played the character in the original campaign. However, it was confirmed in October that Whose Line Is It Anyway? star Wayne Brady would replace Riegel. We're assuming, then, that Scanlan (and Riegel) will have a more prominent role to play in the animated series, despite Scanlan's absence in the campaign's fourth arc.
A few other notable cast members have been announced. Comedian Tom Cardy, known for viral TikTok songs like Perception Check, is confirmed as a guest voice, though his character is unconfirmed. Kevin Michael Richardson, who voices Goro in 1995's Mortal Kombat, Saverok in the original Baldur's Gate game, and Dr Hibbert in The Simpsons, is also on board as an unconfirmed character, as is Mad TV's Debra Wilson.
So far, the only guest star with a confirmed character is Sunil Malhotra, who plays returning character Shaun Gilmore.
Vox Machina season 4 trailers
The final pre-release Vox Machina season 4 trailer was released on April 3, 2026. You can watch it above.
Here, we saw glimpses of what was to come. The Whispered One's cultists are already menacing Vox Machina. Vax and his newfound patron, The Raven Queen, seem to have a lot to do with how the team is tackling the latest big bad.
We saw Keyleth confronting a huge creature underwater, which might be part of the final trial of her Aramenté - which, in the original TTRPG campaign, takes place in the Elemental Plane of Water. Grog, meanwhile, is still smashing up enemies, Pike shows off her seriously electric armor, and Scanlan seems to take part in a heavy metal Bard-off.
We also saw more of the heist the team will carry out on a vault guarded by Monks of the Cobalt Soul. That was first shown in another teaser trailer, back in July 2025:
"So, you plan to sneak into a highly protected vault guarded by a millennia-old sect of warrior monks, and waltz out with knowledge so dangerous, it's been scrubbed from history?" Yes, Gilmore, yes they do.
Who's making Vox Machina Season 4?
The Legend of Vox Machina Season 4 is made by Titmouse Inc. For the unfamiliar, this is the LA-based animation studio founded in 2000 by Chris and Shannon Prynoski.
Chris and Shannon Prynoski are credited as executive producers on Season 4, as are all eight core cast members - along with Ben Kalina, Chief Operating Officer at Titmouse, and Brandon Auman, Vox Machina's showrunner.
It brought us the previous Vox Machina seasons, so the studio is well-equipped to work on number four. However, it's far from a one-trick pony. Titmouse has also worked on some of the world's most famous animated shows, including Netflix series Big Mouth and Love, Death + Robots, Paramount's Star Trek: Lower Decks, and Adult Swim sitcom Royal Crackers.
Will there be a Vox Machina Season 5?
Critical Role confirmed at San Diego Comic Con that there will be a fifth and final season of Vox Machina. Sam Riegel said that season four will set up the show's endgame, while season five will show the explosive conclusion. We're assuming that this means the battle against The Whispered One will span more than a single season.
