Aang is not the most popular commander from the MTG Avatar set

While Aang may be the main character of the Avatar TV series, when it comes to Magic: the Gathering he's got competition for the top spot.

An image of Aang, the last airbender, the has been crossed out. This reflects how he is not the most popular commander from the MTG Avatar set.

Aang may be the Avatar, and the Last Airbender, but in the race to be the most popular commander from the new MTG Avatar crossover, he emerges with only a bronze medal. Two other characters from the element-bending Nickelodeon show have proven themselves to be more popular with Commander players.

The website EDHREC compiles data on the most popular commanders from all of Magic: the Gathering's expansions by collating decklists logged on a variety of sites like Moxfield and Archidekt. As of today, 11/22/2025, the most popular printing of Aang, the four color Avatar Aang, which depicts him at the height of his power after mastering all four elements, leads 3,510 decks. This is reasonably impressive, particularly considering how recently the set was released, but it seems positively insignificant compared to the two legends ahead of him.

The second most popular commander in the set, Toph, the First Metalbender, is more than twice as popular as Avatar Aang, with 7,356 decks to her name. Toph's ability to animate artifacts and turn them into land creatures cracks open a gaping fissure of deck building opportunities. She's so influential that she even caused the price of several utility artifacts to spike.

Narrowly clenching first place is Fire Lord Azula. EDHREC records that 7,377 decks have been built around the teenaged fire queen, meaning that she's only 21 decks ahead of Toph. Azula generates two red mana whenever she attacks, thanks to her firebending ability, and any spells that are cast while she's charging into combat get copied. This gives her an offensive spin on a classic spellslinging strategy, which has proven popular enough to leave Aang in the dust.

It could always be worse, though. Above, I mentioned that Avatar Aang was the most popular card depicting the bald bender. Well, the least popular version, Aang, the Last Airbender, is the commander of a paltry 5 decks. While this is unimpressive, it's also unsurprising. Aang, the Last Airbender is an unremarkable uncommon that's better suited to game store bulk bins than it is to occupying the Command Zone.
