Want to know about the real big hitters from the Pokémon Mega Evolution set? Below you'll find a list of the biggest, most desirable rare Pokémon cards in this release.
The newest Pokémon set, Mega Evolution, came out on September 26, so there's been more than enough time for the secondary market to do its thing and reach a state of (relative) calm.
Between the ultra-scarce gold cards and some gorgeous full art Pokémon and trainers, there are a lot of good cards in Mega Evolution. These are the ones you should be hoping to pull from your packs.
1. Mega Lucario ex Mega Hyper Rare - $776
As you'd expect, the new Mega Ultra Rare cards are the most valuable offerings Mega Evolution. It's not clear exactly how scarce these golden cards are, but some early online estimates suggest they could be found as seldom as 1 in every 35 boxes.
Even the scalpers who line their rooms with Pokémon products would struggle to find one at those odds!
2. Mega Gardevoir ex Mega Hyper Rare - $550
Currently Mega Gardevoir ex's blingy card is significantly cheaper than Lucario's. While I definitely wouldn't turn my nose up at a card worth more than $500, I personally find these new treatments a little gauche. (Yes, I'm going to deal with the likelihood I'll never so much as see one of these cards, let alone open one, by being a snob).
3. Mega Lucario ex SIR - $347
Mega Lucario ex's special illustration rare is full of energy, a dramatic action-packed battle scene between the fighting-type and Mega Venusaur. With two great Pokémon pictured for the price of one, is it any wonder this is one of the biggest chase cards of this Pokémon set? (In fact there are way more Megas if you look closely).
4. Mega Gardevoir ex SIR - $344
While its hyper rare is clearly second fiddle to Lucario's, Gardevoir's special illustration card can go toe-to-toe with the big blue fox thing. That's because it's a truly stunning design, as ornate as you'd expect. I also like the way it incorporates its preevolutions, with Ralts, Kirlia, and regular Gardevoir. No notes, this might just be my favorite card in the set.
5. Mega Venusaur ex SIR - $225
Mega Venusaur ex's special illustration rare is a tropical riot of color. As inarguably the best Kanto starter, this grass-type has plenty of fans. Collectors are going to want to display this card alongside the Illustration Rares for Ivysaur and Bulbasuar, which together form a neat triptych.
6. Mega Latias ex SIR - $210
Mega Latias really showcases this Pokémon's jet engine inspiration. Everything about the artwork here communicates that this creature is moving fast.
It's interesting that this card didn't do much work over in the Japanese market. In fact, overall it seems like the cute cards won out in Japan, with the badass Pokémon performing better in the English versions.
7. Lillie's Determination SIR - $158
As one of the most popular characters in the entirety of Pokémon, it's no surprise that a full art Lillie is one of the most valuable inclusions in this set
With her iconic design (even when she's not dressed as a Nihilego) tragic backstory, and significant character growth in the games and the anime, it's not hard to see why the fans love Lillie, or why her supporter card is so costly.
8. Mega Kangaskhan ex SIR - $119
This normal type is another action-packed shot. If you love baby Kangaskhan then you'll love this card, as the joey (is that the right term?) takes center stage here. We've fallen down a tier from the likes of Mega Latias, but this is still a very snazzy card.
9. Mega Absol ex SIR - $116
Mega Absol is the night. Perhaps the most emo Pokémon card ever, is it fair to call a card that's over $100 underrated?
