Pokémon's Phantasmal Flames set is out, and we're keen to know what the biggest rare Pokémon cards are.
If you want to know about the most highly sought after cards in this latest Pokémon set, check out the prices below. Or if you're still stuck on the previous batch, here's our guide to Mega Evolution's best cards.
A word to the wise - prices tend to fluctuate pretty wildly around a new set's release. If you're checking in a few weeks after publication, don't be surprised if the numbers we list don't perfectly line up with what you see online!
1. Mega Charizard X ex SIR - $820
Easily the best SAR card in the Mega Evolution era so far, this version of Charizard is, frankly, stunning. The blue and orange fire contrasts beautifully (it's giving ATLA finale) all three of the Mega's preevolved forms are crammed up in the corner. I love how they're all looking up at the big black-and-blue dragon, a nice bit of visual storytelling that.
It's just a shame that the English version of this card slightly covers up Charmander's face (the Japanese text fits neatly). Still, that's not done anything to harm the price on a top notch Pokémon card.
2. Mega Charizard X ex MHR - $725
Mega Evolutions' mega hyper rare cards dropped in price shortly after release, but soared again once TCGPlayer published its data on their pull rates.
As a result of its rarity, the Mega Charizard X card is similarly expensive. No matter how tacky I, personally, think they look, I can't deny these gold hyper rares are proving their worth.
3. Mega Charizard X ex UR - $67
Oh woah, okay, that was quite the drop! Weren't we at three figures just a second ago? Sadly, this set has a pretty shocking drop off once you pass the two most sought after cards, but while it's a worse Charizard than the previous pair, we still wouldn't be unhappy to see one.
This version of Charizard is about what we'd expect to see at this rarity - the Pokémon striking a cool pose with thick outlining.
Like the other Mega UR cards, it features the unevolved form of the Pokémon in the background. This card also continues the green and pink coloring from the packaging.
4. Dawn SIR - $63
Full art trainer cards are often near the top of these lists, especially when they showcase a famous character like Dawn. A playable character and NPC in the games, and an Ash Ketchum companion in the anime, this card will be a great pull for anyone nostalgic for Diamond and Pearl.
5. Mega Sharpedo ex SAR - $51
Probably the most fearsome looking card in this entire set. I called it when I said this card would be worth much more in English than the measly $25 it cost in Japan. I mean, how many Pokémon cards look like an incoming missile?!
6. Mega Lopunny ex SAR - $49
Probably the coolest Mega Lopunny has ever looked, this normal type Mega ex card is an explosion of light and color.
7. Oricorio ex promo - $42
Surprisingly, little Oricorio gives Charizard a run for its money, in bombastic, fiery artwork if not in price tag. As you might've already guessed, this card is illustrated by Shinji Kanda, probably the most famous Pokémon artist right now, and known for elevating whatever he lends his pen too.
People have caught on to the Kanda effect now - there's no more underestimating a card by him.
However, the English-language version isn't sold in regular Phantasmal Flames packs. It's a promo card sold in the Mega Charizard X ex Ultra-Premium Collection. That's knocked it down in price a fair bit, though the Ultra-Premium Collections are so costly, even their promo is worth quite a lot!
8. Meowth IR - $35
This Meowth card has such a classic watercolor look that I wouldn't have been surprised if you'd told me Ken Sugimori himself had drawn it. Instead, it's Uninori - whose art you'll have seen before on cards like Rocket's Nidoking and Raging Bolt ex.
For a mere IR, this card is fetching a pretty high price on the secondary market. That may partly be because it was previously a Japanese promo, one fans had reason to believe wouldn't be sold outside of the country!
