It's Grotmas time, which means daily goodies from Warhammer Community! Compared to the advent of yester-year, when we were practically bombarded with new Warhammer 40k detachments, 2025 has had a much more hobbyist focus, with many of the articles so far covering painting tips and fiction.
But, perhaps because 40k's rules addicts were plotting rebellion, Games Workshop's now released a new detachment for the Astra Militarum: Grizzled Company.
Lore-wise, this detachment marks a company of disciplined, elite soldiers led by veteran officers. In gameplay terms, it lets you make more out of the Astra Militarum faction's orders mechanic.
The basic detachment rules contain some of Grizzled Company's best stuff. Each Astra Militarum officer in your army can issue an additional order, and while under an order your units get to reroll 1s to hit. They can also reroll 1s to wound when attacking a target in range of an objective marker. This is a really powerful passive buff, and the additional order will mean you have no trouble keeping it online.
Going over the enhancements, there's one that lets you attach a commissar to an ogryn or bullgryn squad (fun!) one that lets your officers issue orders from double the distance, and two new order types. Aquilan Eye gives the order 'Target Weak Spot' which increases AP, and Spec Ops Veteran (only accessible to infantry officers) gives 'Move to the Shadows', granting a unit stealth when it's targeted by a ranged attack.
This detachment's six stratagems have a pretty offensive focus, with half of them buffing your units during the shooting phase. Of these, Mordian Minute stands out. It works on infantry units affected by the First Rank, Fire! Second Rank, Fire! Order, giving them +1 strength to their attacks. This is great for punching through high toughness threats, especially when you're pew-pewing away with rapid fire weapons.
Other stratagems include Snap to It, which lets an officer issue an order at the start of any phase, and Additional Armour, which you can pop on a unit when it's targeted by a ranged attack to lower that attack's AP.
Overall, this detachment seems designed for infantry, particularly infantry that can take multiple orders, but many of its best features work on vehicle-heavy lists as well. Tanks are not about to turn up their barrels at additional orders, nor the mighty rerolls, nor the Target Weak Spot order. There are some infantry-specific stratagems, but most work on any Astra Militarum unit.
This Grotmas release was actually supposed to be part of the quarterly update later in the month. Alongside Grizzled Company there are five more detachments for different Warhammer 40k factions coming, and they're now all expected to drop over the next week. Place yer bets now!
