World of Tanks has been around for almost 15 years now, but the D-Day 80th Anniversary Event that started on June 4th is the game’s peak. It might climb even higher in future, but overall, it’s never been better, with plenty of options for both PvP and PvE play, an active community of around 75,000 players a day, loads of tanks, and new content coming all the time.
So what specifically does the D-Day event bring with it? Well, while WoT has historically been a multiplayer experience, the new Operation Overlord (which was the original codename for the Battle of Normandy) allows you to play through the battle that decided the outcome of the Second World War. If that’s not exciting on its own, there’s a brand new themed Battle Pass that nets you lots of unlockables and even a selection of three new Tier VI Premium tanks inspired by the historic conflict.
If you’ve never played World of Tanks before, this new single-player campaign presents a perfect opportunity for you to get to grips with the game and its mechanics before diving into the multiplayer arenas. Joining an online game that’s been around for so long can be daunting, and this opportunity saves you from the trial by fire of jumping straight into a battle with seasoned players.
Meanwhile, if you’re an old fan who’s been away for some time, it’s well worth returning to see how much it’s grown and evolved. Over the years, there have been some wackier World of Tanks events, crossing it over with the likes of Warhammer and Terminator, and while they were fantastic in their own right, the D-Day event brings it back to what the game is really all about: historic tank-based combat.
History buffs will also appreciate the fact that there are multiple live streams running throughout the month, which involve talks with World War 2 experts, showcases of historic equipment and artifacts, and of course, most excitingly of all, IRL tank and plane displays. They’re really pulling all the stops to make this an event that you won’t want to miss, with loads of things going on to keep players happy.
Ultimately, that’s the real reason that now is the best time to get into (or back into) World of Tanks. Fans have been crying out for single-player campaigns and more content drawn from history and developer, Wargaming has delivered. We’re excited to see what the future holds for World of Tanks because the developers are actively creating the kinds of experiences that players want.
Even outside of this event, World of Tanks has a lot going for it, with over 600 unlockable tanks and a selection of over 40 maps. There’s so much variety which helps keep the game feeling fresh even after you’ve played through hundreds of battles. Play World of Tanks today to find out for yourself.
