Yugioh Egyptian God cards

The Yugioh Egyptian God cards are some of the most iconic monsters in the anime, manga, and game - but is there enough support for their decks?

YuGiOh Egyptian God Cards Obelisk the Tormentor and Slifer the Sky Dragon

The Yugioh Egyptian God cards first appeared in the Battle City arc of the Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters anime, where they had a thunderous impact on the duelling arena. In the collectible card game, they’re extremely powerful – if flawed – monsters.

They’re not the most expensive Yugioh cards, and they’re not powerful enough to appear on either the Yugioh banlist or Yugioh Master Duel banlist. But they are iconic – so we’ve provided all the information you’ll need to build an Egyptian Gods Yugioh deck.

Here’s what you need to know about the Yugioh Egyptian God cards:

Egyptian God Cards

Three playable Egyptian God Cards were released between 2010 and 2012. They are all Divine-Beast Effect Monsters. They each require three Tributes to Normal Summon, can’t be set, and they have restrictions on being Special Summoned.

Your opponent cannot negate their normal summon, or use cards and effects during their normal summon, protecting them from Traps and field Spells already in play at the moment that they’re summoned.

Yugioh Egyptian God card - Slifer the Sky Dragon

Slifer the Sky Dragon

Slifer the Sky Dragon’s attack and defense are each 1000x the number of cards in your hand. When your opponent Normal or Special Summons a card to the board face-up in Attack Position, it loses 2000 attack, and is destroyed if it drops to 0 or less attack as a result.

If you Special Summon Slifer, he goes to the graveyard during that turn’s End Phase.

Yugioh Egyptian God card - Obelisk the Tormentor

Obelisk the Tormentor

Obelisk cannot be targeted by card effects. If, after you’ve summoned him, you can afford to Tribute a further two monsters, you can wipe your opponent’s board of monsters, though he can’t attack after doing this.

If you Special Summon Obelisk, he goes to the graveyard during that turn’s End Phase.

Yugioh Egyptian God card - Winged Dragon of Ra

The Winged Dragon of Ra

When you summon the Winged Dragon of Ra, you can voluntarily drop down to 100 life points, increasing the Dragon’s attack and defense by the amount of life you’ve just paid. You can also pay 1000 life points to destroy one target monster on the field whenever you like.

The Winged Dragon of Ra cannot be Special Summoned at all.

Illegal Egyptian God prints

As well as the TCG cards, there have been several promotional printings of the Egyptian God cards, called Illegal prints. Though superficially similar, they have flavor text instead of rules text, and cannot be used in competitions.

Yugioh Egyptian God structure deck

Yugioh Egyptian God deck

Yugioh Egyptian God decks typically aim to resolve one of the powerful Egyptian God cards and use it, and its signature move cards, to beat your opponent into the ground. Several of the key cards for the Egyptian gods were printed into structure decks, and Egyptian Gods structure decks make a solid foundation to build from.

Although they’re very powerful, they’re quite vulnerable to enemy interaction once they’re on the board. Only Obelisk has protection from enemy cards and effects, and it can still be destroyed by effects that don’t declare a target.

Their summon cost is also very high. While it’s not unusual to have to pay three Tribute to bring a Synchro, Xyz or Link Summon monster into play, those monsters are in the Extra deck, not the main deck. To get an Egyptian God into play you need to arrange a board state with three Tribute monsters, and a hand with the God in it, to complete the summon.

As such, Egyptian God decks aren’t really suited for competitive play. They’re just fine for friendly games, however, and they can’t be beat for theme.

Most of the support cards for Egyptian God decks focus on one God specifically, though cards that boost the Divine Attribute or Divine-Beast type can support all three Gods. The Winged Dragon of Ra has a lot more support than the other two Gods.
